Making mistakes is a natural part of life and the online marketing business. However, it’s better to avoid as many mistakes as possible as best as you can, due to the obvious negative impact they can have.
• Lack of passion
One of the biggest mistakes newbie online marketers make is to assume that online marketing is easy. This false assumption trips them up when they realize just how much work is required to make an online business work.
Very often we see ‘make money online’ guides promising easy profits with just a couple of hours of work a day. There are photos of flashy cars, huge mansions, beautiful women and the ‘laptop lifestyle’ by the beach where all you do is sip drinks and watch your PayPal account flood with cash.
The reality is quite the opposite. You’ll need to spend a great deal of time testing, tweaking and setting up required funnels, pages, adverts, etc. to get your online marketing business off the ground.
If you lack passion for online marketing, you’ll quit too easily when the going gets tough… and it usually does. Getting started is just the beginning. You have to go through the ‘hard yards’ until you reach the place where your income is stable and passive.
Only now will you begin to have the freedom to live life the easier way. Remember that being persistent will help you get through the hard times, and being consistent will help you reap the benefits.
So, ask yourself what marketing online really means to you. Why do you want to do it? What are your reasons? If it’s only about having the easy lifestyle where you won’t need to work, the chances are that you’ll probably fail.
This may sound harsh… but it’s the truth. Your goals have to be bigger than the easy lifestyle. Figure out your ‘why’ and you’ll stay the course, even when progress is slow and uncertain.
• Lack of Repetition
Repetition is the mother of skill. It doesn’t matter if you’re a writer, a graphic designer or if you have an e-commerce store. You have to keep doing what you’re doing so that you get very good at it.
Most newbies quit too soon. They don’t give themselves enough time to make mistakes and learn from them. They are scared to fail without realizing that failure is not the opposite of success, but a necessary part of success.
Keep repeating everything you do. It’s good practice and is the cornerstone of achieving excellence in everything that you do.
• Not Knowing That It’s A Numbers Game
The Pareto principle says that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. That basically means that if you have, say, 10 websites, 2 will probably make more money than all the rest. If you publish 10 Kindle books, 1 to 3 of them might be bestsellers, while the rest don’t do so well. This is just the way things are.
Most beginners just don’t do enough. They may write one book or create one ad and, if that doesn’t take off, they give up. Alternatively, they set up their blog and if they don’t see income coming in after 2 blog posts, they give up. They’ve hardly scratched the surface but they throw in the towel.
You need to take massive action – and then do more. The more effort you expend, the better results you will achieve. So, once you establish one stream of income, you can scale it up, so that your earnings scale up as well. Once you have a stable source of income, keep it going and start working on the next income stream. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. The more effort you put in, the more income you’ll earn, and the more success you’ll achieve.
